Helicopter or boat across Biscayne Bay?
They solve different problems. The boat is the default; the helicopter earns its place on three specific days, and one of them is the day the sea is too rough for the boat.
On a normal day, the boat wins
Door to door, the difference is smaller than it looks. A bay crossing by tender is about twelve minutes plus boarding; a helicopter is about four minutes in the air plus the time to reach a pad, to be weighed and briefed, and to get from the arrival pad to where you were actually going. On a short hop, the ground time eats the advantage.
The boat also carries what you are carrying. Luggage on a light helicopter is small and soft, total weight matters more than seat count, and a hard suitcase is often a no.
The three days the helicopter is right
The first is the rough day. When the bay is short and steep and the captains are cancelling, the air is the only thing still moving, and it is the one day a transfer is genuinely irreplaceable.
The second is distance. Fort Lauderdale, Key Largo and anything further down the keys turn a sea passage into an hour or more, and that is where the aircraft starts winning on real time rather than on paper.
The third is the flight itself. Fifteen to thirty minutes over the bay, the reef line and the keys is the reason most people book the first time, and it is not a transfer at all: it is the thing you came for.
Who is actually flying you
Not us. Flights are operated by licensed air operators with their own certificate, their own aircraft and their own insurance. We check the certificate and the insurance before a single seat is published and re-check at each expiry; an operator whose papers lapse disappears from the application until they are back in order.
If a flight is cancelled for weather, you are refunded in full and we show you the boats that can still do the trip, when any can.
