The docks that actually work in Biscayne Bay
A crossing is only as fast as its worst end. Picking the right dock is worth more than picking the right boat, and it is the decision people spend the least time on.
On the beach side
Sunset Harbour is the obvious one: it sits on the bay side of Miami Beach, it is a short ride from most of South Beach, and it puts you straight into the open bay without a bridge. It is also busy, and the last hundred metres by car at seven in the evening can undo the time you saved.
Miami Beach Marina, at the southern tip, is the other choice. It is closer to Government Cut and therefore to anything heading out to open water, and it is simpler to reach from the south end of the island.
On the mainland
Bayside sits at the foot of downtown and is the most convenient dock in the city for anything happening in the business district. It is also the most exposed to cruise and tourist traffic, so allow for the walk.
Dinner Key, in Coconut Grove, is where most day charters and sunset outings actually leave from. It is further south, which adds a few minutes to a downtown crossing but puts you much closer to the sandbars and to Key Biscayne.
The Miami River is the quiet answer for Brickell. It is a no-wake zone with bridges, so the last stretch is slow, but it drops you inside the district rather than on its edge.
Further out
Crandon Marina on Key Biscayne is twelve minutes of water from the mainland and a long detour by road, which is exactly the trip the bay was made for. Haulover, to the north, is the way out to the ocean and the departure point for most fishing.
Fort Lauderdale is an hour and a half of highway or a sea passage of under an hour in the right conditions, and it is the crossing where the difference is largest and most weather-dependent.
